Security holes are inevitably caused by the rapid development and distribution of information and communication technologies. Thus, society faces more than ever before the threat of computers breaking down, being misused or sabotaged.

In today’s world, sensitive data is everywhere. From customer address databases, which are of essential importance for almost every kind of business, to stored information about purchasing behaviour in online shops, data security is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge and protecting customer privacy.

But data security has come a long way from locked filing cabinets and strongrooms. It has grown into a complex field which places high demands on the skills of specialists. To give just one example, the increasing practice of electronically gathering and linking personal data gives rise to many problems of data protection and the preservation of data integrity. This includes security issues posed by different technologies such as RFID and intelligent traffic systems and traffic control measures as well as modern biometric identification and access control systems.

The more we depend on different information and communication technologies the greater will be the need to inform ourselves about the topic security. Security has become a decisive factor in the successful application of modern information and communication technologies.

Security problems might occur on their own, but they won’t solve themselves without action. Security has to be planned, lived, implemented and continually adapted.

Companies invest large amounts of money in security technologies. Security holes in systems are closed; networks are secured against possible attacks. Nevertheless, companies still suffer substantial damage caused by security problems over and over again. The reasons for this are manifold: the budget is too short, a lack of resources and above all a lack of specialists in this field.

The aim of the master’s degree programme “Advanced Security Engineering” is to contribute to the security issue by educating experts in the field of security engineering.
