The Mask of Agamemnon, the Nightwatch, Nofretete and Saliera — these exhibits are so famous that they can be called icons of art. This thesis demonstrates how important the story behind each exhibit is. In order to create an icon of art, the correct staging is not enough: the story behind each object is important as well. This master’s thesis looks at how these exhibits were first presented, and also outlines the history of scenography in response to the question: Can an icon of art be created on purpose?
