“Critical Media Competence. Political adult education in the digital age”

Intercultural skills and intercultural competence
(cancelled) Equality and Difference in Adult Civic Education (Copy)

The current discussion about the political consequences of \”Fake news\”, the personalised display of media content on search engines and social media platforms or the effects of hatred on the net makes it vividly clear that the ability to deal competently and critically with the
media is becoming increasingly relevant in our society.

Technically media are increasingly invading almost all areas of everyday life, considerably determining our perception of reality and shaping our perception of reality and influence our actions and our relationships with others. The media thus form a basis for the understanding of democracy and political action.

This development can be described by the term “mediatisation of the world in which we live“.

Critical media competence emphasises the political dimension of media action. Interests, power structures, economic and social dynamics must be understood, in order to be able to deal consciously with the media: in the sense of receiving, analysing and shaping content on an individual, social and cultural level.

On the basis of current aspects of media change, the two-day workshop provides knowledge about and analysis tools for topics such as:

  • Media economics and digitalisation

  • “Filter bubbles” and “Echo chambers”

  • Strategies against fake news and hate speech

  • Big data

  • Protection of privacy

  • Media/copyright and personal rights

  • Data Confidentiality
