BrickBike

BrickBike is a modular children's bike that convert from a running bike to a bicycle.

Sascha Schildbecks bachelor’s thesis was honoured with the Design Concept Award 2024, which was presented as part of the Austrian State Prize for Design at the Museumsquartier in Vienna.

The goal was to offer a cost-effective, durable and easy-to-use solution to a broad target group. When a child is ready to learn to ride a bike, the frame can be adapted to the child’s size in just a few steps and a modular drive unit can be screwed onto the running bike. This 3-in-1 solution includes a 12-inch wheel size running bike, which can be expanded to a 14-inch running bike and to a 14-inch bicycle.
Through a subscription system, parents rent the product until the child outgrows the wheel. After use, the product is returned to the provider. If the product is damaged and can no longer be repaired, it is dismantled and shredded and returned to the circular economy.
Jury statement: With the Brick-Bike, you notice that it is designed as a holistic system. From its creation to its utilisation, to its return. It’s not about ownership, but about participation.
