Street Art and Murals have been used to convey messages, tell stories and interact with people for decades. This bachelor’s thesis looks into different methods on how to express cultural identity through Street Art and Murals. The author addresses the origin and development of the Mural Art Movement, as well its positive impact on people and their environment. She also outlines the topic of cultural expression and explores different methods street artists use to include cultural content in their murals.
As cultural expression is a very subjective and personal issue, interviews with street artists were conducted to provide personal input from different artists with different cultural backgrounds. The thesis reaches the conclusion, that there are numerous methods to establish a relation between murals and culture and that cultural and historical context is crucial to understand these methods correctly and to assign them to the right culture.
