Board games continue to gain popularity, and the board game community is constantly growing. Along with the game mechanics, the graphic design is a vital component for the creation of a successful game. The design must be aesthetically pleasing, as well as functional and user‒friendly.
This thesis presents the major hurdles and techniques that are encountered when developing a board game design concept. Using this knowledge, a new design concept for an open source game mechanic is created and implemented. During the course of this process, the focus is on the balance between aesthetics and usability in order to ensure the best possible gaming experience for the player.
