In the fourth semester of our degree programme there is a mandatory semester abroad, which students can choose to spend at one of our 60 partner universities around the world. Contact with new cultures is an excellent way for our students to experience for themselves how diverse and exciting life in other countries can be and also provides opportunities to further extend knowledge of foreign languages acquired as part of their studies.
Throughout the decision making phase, students at the Institute of International Management receive support both from our international coordinators as well as from fellow students who have already gained experience abroad. We provide assistance with regard to choice of study programme, visa issues, questions about accommodation etc. and continue to offer support to our students while they are studying abroad. We have also developed a special course aimed at enabling students to reflect on their experiences abroad in a structured process.

International Mobility
In the fourth semester our students spend a mandatory semester abroad at one of the partner universities that make up our worldwide network. As English-speaking locations tend to prove very popular, the students in the particular year group decide themselves on how the places should be allocated. Often the places in the most popular locations are given to students who are best in their year or may simply be allocated on a raffle basis.
This is followed by the application process, which must be carried out by FH JOANNEUM on the one hand and by the partner university on the other. Our students are actively supported throughout the process by our international coordinators.
If students choose a European destination for their study abroad semester they are eligible to receive financial support through the Erasmus+ programme. Students heading for non-European destinations find the [database of the Austrian Exchange Service (OeAD)] (www.grants.at) very helpful. It includes some 1,200 entries and provides information on current funding schemes for study and research abroad and national grants.
Accreditation of ECTS credits earned during the semester abroad is subject to special regulations for students on the International Management degree programme and there is a requirement to gain a minimum of 25 ECTS credits.
Our current network includes some 25 non-European cooperation partners in Africa, Asia, Australia, North, South and Central America and around 35 European universities. We constantly strive to extend our network abroad. Destinations in Australia (Melbourne), Canada (Calgary, Victoria), the USA (California, Massachusetts and Albuquerque) as well as in Central and South America (Santiago de Chile, Sao Paolo, Santo Domingo and Mexico) are particularly popular with our students. The United Kingdom (Nottingham and Portsmouth) and France (Paris, Montpellier and Marseille) are popular European destinations. All of our cooperation agreements are subject to excellent quality in teaching as well as a high quality and broad ranging choice of courses, which are also taught in English.
