Media Competence and Digital Literacy

Requirements

Option 1: Bachelor\’s degree or equivalent

Applicants without professional experience must have a university degree equivalent to at least 180 ECTS. This includes a relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent post-secondary qualification in, e.g.:

  • media science,
  • humanities, cultural or social sciences,
  • teaching.

Given the intended target group and professional fields, the course is aimed at holders of Bachelor’s degrees in the following areas:

  • Nursery Education
  • Educational Science/Pedagogy
  • Information and Communication Design
  • Journalism
  • Communication Sciences
  • Cultural Management
  • Arts and Culture
  • Art History
  • Media Management
  • Philosophy
  • Psychology
  • Public Relations
  • Journalism
  • Law
  • Human Services Management and Public Management
  • Social Work
  • Sociology
  • Linguistics and Literary Studies
  • Transcultural and Intercultural Communication
  • Corporate Communication, Political Communication, NPR/NPO Communication, Organisational Communication, etc.

In addition to learning to understand and interpret media events and networks, the course also focuses on professional work with and within the digital society, the production of target group-specific (online) media content and on passing on these skills in a goal-oriented and comprehensible way as teachers. The course is therefore in particular aimed at applicants with the following occupations:

  • People active in cultural studies
  • People active in adult education and continuing education
  • Information and communication designers
  • Journalists
  • People active in youth work
  • Child and adolescent psychologists

  • Art historians (especially in the fields of digital / media art)

  • Teachers at schools and universities

  • People active in the fields of media theory or media psychology

  • People active in philosophy (especially with a focus on post-factual society / digitalisation / globalisation)

Tip

If you have completed a degree different from the above, you may still be eligible to be admitted to the Media Competence and Digital Literacy course. Please contact the course head by email to heinz.fischer@fh-joanneum.at.

Option 2: Relevant professional qualification

The degree requirement is equivalent to at least five years of relevant professional experience combined with a general university entrance qualification. This applies, for example, to applicants who are or have been working in training and continuing education or adult education, in social work, social pedagogy or psychology as well as in media and communication companies.

During the first semester of the introductory phase, students who do not have a degree will focus on scientific basics, academic skills and the criteria of scientific analysis.

Professional qualifications related to the Master’s course must be proven and documented.

Tip

Students without an academic degree can have their qualifications recognised, especially practical professional skills.
