The Smart Production Lab at FH JOANNEUM in Kapfenberg is a 600 square metre teaching and research laboratory dedicated entirely to digitalisation and Industry 4.0. It was designed and implemented by the Institute of Industrial Management to accelerate digital transformation processes in production and support small and medium-sized enterprises in particular. In the laboratory, company processes are researched from planning to product delivery. The latest manufacturing technologies are utilised. The aim is to break down barriers to digitalisation and promote creativity and innovation with a focus on digital production. The Smart Production Lab serves both as a teaching factory for students and as a research laboratory for companies. Here, visitors can see for themselves how digital ordering processes, embedded in upstream and downstream processes, work in practice.

The aim is to revolutionise the production processes of the future by networking machines, people and services across the entire production process. The Smart Production Lab utilises a variety of state-of-the-art technologies for data-driven production and Industry 4.0 approaches. These technologies include

  • IIoT scenarios (Industrial Internet of Things)
  • Integrated production
  • Collaborative robotics
  • Additive manufacturing with 3D printing
  • Digital retrofitting
  • AI and data analytics
  • Digital assistance systems such as XR applications, exoskeletons and motion capturing

These technologies are used in the Smart Production Lab to support companies in their digital transformation and ensure their long-term competitiveness. Live demonstrations and specialist input from experts from various fields will bring these technologies to life in a practical way and provide ideas on how they can be used in your own company.

We also have well-equipped auditoriums, seminar rooms and IT laboratories. The software at our institute is always up to date and corresponds to that used in industry. Showcases with exhibits from industry are used to illustrate and explain various manufacturing processes. They show the technical areas of application and special features of these processes so that visitors gain a clear and understandable insight into industrial production.
