What is Environmental Management?

Environmental management, energy systems, sustainable mobility

Actively shape the living spaces of tomorrow: whether it’s the energy transition, the mobility transition or the increased sustainability trend in companies – during your studies you will build up the necessary expertise to tackle these challenges in your day-to-day work. This programme is the right choice if you want to develop your skills at the interface between management and technology and climb the career ladder in the cutting-edge areas of the green transition. The Bachelor’s degree programme covers topics ranging from resource management, change processes and renewable energy technologies to international logistics. On the industrial engineering degree programme, you will not only learn how to identify problems in these areas and analyse them at a technical level, but also develop solutions with a view to industry and society.

‘The degree programme is the ideal foundation for my job as a Climate Impact Specialist. I have acquired extensive knowledge in the areas of sustainability, energy efficiency, project management and business administration. I am confronted with tasks on a daily basis where the knowledge I learnt during my studies supports me. If you want to protect our planet with common sense and sustainability, this degree programme is just right for you.’
Thomas Steiner, BSc, Graduate, Climate Impact Specialist bei voestalpine High Performance Metals
‘The Bachelor’s degree programme is in tune with the times and prepares students perfectly for the job market with its focus on topics such as energy and mobility, but above all the environment. What I personally have always really liked is the combination of technology and management. Training as an industrial engineer is a big plus point for the degree programme and, of course, the large proportion of practical activities.’
Thomas Königshofer, BSc MSc, Graduate, auditor for energy certifications and expert in the field of environmental measurement technology at TÜV SÜD Landesgesellschaft Österreich GmbH

What will I learn on the programme?

The part-time Bachelor’s degree programme in Environmental Management builds up a broad knowledge base in the first two semesters. From the 3rd semester onwards, students can specialise further in one of the fields of environment, energy or mobility:

Your advantage on the job: Sustainable environmental management

Modern environmental management is a key issue for companies of all sizes and from all sectors – from start-ups to large corporations. In order to achieve national and international climate targets, it is important to monitor emissions, recognise environmental pollution and operate a serious circular economy. Particularly in an operational context, companies must regularly deal with new requirements from politicians, consumers and other stakeholders and act proactively in order to remain competitive. During your studies, you will acquire the necessary expertise to master these challenges of the coming decades.

Tip

Additional training is particularly important in everyday working life: As part of the degree programme, there is the opportunity to complete certified additional training to become a waste or environmental officer. Experts in modern environmental and waste management are in high demand in various industries, but also in administration.

Energy systems with a future

The energy requirements of companies and communities are constantly growing. We therefore need modern and innovative energy concepts for the sustainable production, distribution and storage of this energy. As part of your degree programme, you will learn about the latest concepts in this specialist area in a practice-oriented way in the Energy Analytics and Solution Lab from the first semester onwards. In lectures such as Energy Technologies or Energy System Planning, you will learn about the energy supply of the future from a technological, economic and social perspective. In order to meet the requirements of industry, we also train you in the areas of industrial energy efficiency, storage technologies and energy management.

Bringing modern mobility to the road

The mobility of the future will not only take place on the roads: whether by rail, in the air or on the world’s oceans – the effects of climate change are increasing the demands on our mobility systems. In companies, but also in urban centres, everything will revolve around the topics of ‘last mile’, ‘intelligent mobility’ and the reduction of environmental pollution in the coming years. As part of the programme, you will learn about strategies for a mobility turnaround. We provide you with the necessary tools for analysing and planning modern mobility systems and logistics concepts. In order to be at the cutting edge of technology, you will also deal with smart cities, infrastructure design and planning and innovative mobility solutions, such as e-mobility, autonomous driving and soft mobility.

Expertise for project managers

Professional development requires not only specialised knowledge, but also the ability to deal with a wide range of topics and work on cross-departmental projects. The degree programme therefore builds up relevant business management expertise so that graduates can present themselves well on any stage. During the programme, you will learn essential skills in the areas of project management, communication and conflict management. Courses such as Business Management and Leadership, Management Systems and Mediation in Projects provide you with the necessary expertise to present yourself confidently in everyday working life.
