Lecture from Hermann Ferschitz and Josè Palacios

FH JOANNEUM - Klima-Wind-Kanal Wien / Droplets in Icing Clouds

The Institute of Luftfahrt / Aviation invites you cordially to the evening lecture on aircraft icing.

Klima-Wind-Kanal Wien

Hermann Ferschitz, Rail Tec Arsenal
First part

Fundamental Understanding of Residence Time Requirements of Single Droplets for the Reproduction of Partially Melted Glaciated Clouds

José Palacios, Pennsylvania State University
Second part

Topic description:

It is well-known that inflight aircraft icing poses a major safety hazard since the beginnings of modern aviation. In the development and optimization process of new ice protection systems, e.g., systems suitable for wings consisting of carbon fiber composites, comprehensive tests in icing wind tunnels are indispensable. Therefore much effort is made to simulate natural icing conditions in wind tunnels as realistically as possible.

In the first talk Rail Tec Arsenal’s “big” Climatic Wind Tunnel is introduced and it is exposed how this facility can be used to test full-scale rotors, aircraft components, fuselage or air inlets of a helicopter with engine running in extreme climatic, snow and especially icing conditions. In the second talk ongoing research at the Pennsylvania State University (jointly with Rail Tec Arsenal and FH JOANNEUM) concerning the preparation and surveying of icing clouds in icing wind tunnels is presented.
